WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY?

Jon Dostou is an award-winning bandleader, and Montessori Artist-in-Residence who has been teaching aspiring musicians for over two decades. His heuristic approach to education gives students the tools they need to learn how to play the music they love, to listen critically, read carefully, focus, and persevere.

Music is a wonderful conduit to higher learning, advanced study methods, and complex problem solving; it is a lifelong vocation that improves with age. Many people develop long-lasting cognitive and physical skills through practicing music. Some of Dostou’s students have gone on to enjoy their own careers in music, as well as receive college scholarships, awards, and accolades for their work.

Jon maintains an active studio for in-person and online lessons. The Online Studio supports High-Fidelity Zoom Meetings with direct, crystal-clear audio, hard-wired, low-latency connections, and multiple camera angles for detailed viewing of instruments and hand positions.

Are you thinking about getting started, picking up where you left off, or do you know another aspiring musician?

STUDENT REVIEWS:

Jon focuses on the fundamentals (e.g., reading notes) and first principles of music, and this helps his students develop a deep appreciation for the art, and broadly for music in general.

If you’re looking to learn how to play guitar or bass, you would do well to work with Jon Dostou. Jon is an accomplished musician and composer, and more importantly for you, a really good teacher. I started lessons with Jon about four years ago, having just picked up bass guitar at the age of 65. While I had played guitar years before, it had been a very long time and I was pretty much starting over. Jon was patient and supportive, but also a great motivator by teaching a blend of basics (e.g. scales) and more applied lessons, such as learning songs. It was a great way to keep your motivation up to practice. The other great thing about working with Jon was his ability to change up on the fly and find a way to meet your needs.

Having Jon Dostou as my guitar teacher is an experience that I have cherished throughout my entire life. Working with him was so different from the other musical instructors I’ve had, because I was able to form an incredibly strong bond with him over the years we worked together.
Every lesson was something I looked forward to with eagerness: anticipation of what he would teach me and how I would learn to challenge my abilities as a musician.
From a young age, Jon became—and will be for the rest of my life—a huge role model for the kind of person that I want to be: fun, creative, talented, and a beautiful soul. The lessons he taught me, and the bond I had with him are unforgettable. Jon has been like a big brother to me. Every song we wrote and played together, every performance, every lesson, every moment are times that I hold so close to my heart.
Jon is an amazing teacher and person, and any student who gets the chance to work with him is extremely lucky.
